Fit Low Relief Buildings Behind Your Tracks

A Siding Works building is a low relief facade: a front, two short return walls, a roof, a floor and a back panel, not a full four-sided building. It's built to sit against a wall or backscene and take up only a shallow strip of the space behind your running line, rather than the full depth a free-standing model would need.

Width, height and depth, from your settings

Width is your chosen frontage width, split evenly across the modules in the kit you've picked; Station Terrace and Market Street each have three modules, Goods Yard has two, Yard Office has one. Height and depth both follow your chosen scale rather than the width: depth in particular stays the same across every frontage width you choose, since it comes from the building's real-world depth scaled down, not from how wide you've made the front.

Two worked depths

Every Siding Works building scales from the same real-world depth. At OO (1:76), that depth prints at roughly 11.8mm. At British N (1:148), the same building prints at roughly 6.1mm deep. Neither figure includes a baseboard, backscene or any glue thickness you add during assembly, so leave a small margin beyond the printed figure when you're planning tight clearances.

Placing a building in plan

Sketch, or measure directly on your baseboard, the strip of space available behind the running line at the point you want to place a building: its length along the track, and the depth free before the backscene or the edge of the board. Compare that to the footprint shown in Scene Builder before you print, since it's calculated from your actual width and scale settings, not a generic figure. There's no universal clearance we can state for every layout; the space you actually have is the only measurement that matters.

Choosing which kit fits

Goods Yard's wide goods doors and taller module height suit a backdrop behind a siding or loading area; Station Terrace's evenly spaced windows suit a longer run behind a platform or through line.
